proenza schouler presented a collection that seemed like a futuristic version of the cool, and laid back surfer girl. with tie-dye like you've never seen and day-glo neons like you haven't worn since the mid-80s - this collection skewed much younger and less structured than previous seasons to great effect.
an old-school big top feel was the theme for alice temperley's ss2010 temperley london presentation. and though the top hats could have made things a bit too costumey, the overall outcome was a sort of cockney elegance. dressing up with a bit of humour and a slight edge.
i don't have much to say in regard to vera wang's ss2010 collection, other than to say that i absolutely adore it.
her aesthetic, her tough-romantic dressing is just so something i relate to. and it makes the inspirational, 100% aspirational. in short, if i had the druthers, i'd have it all...
if it's clothes you want, you can simply go down the street and pick something up. if it's a show that you're after, you can reliably expect marc jacobs to deliver. and yes, perhaps on first viewing the ruffles, the full kabuki face and it's all-at-onceness may seem a bit jarring, on repeat you'll have to admit that with jacobs there is a difference between seeing some clothes and experiencing fashion as an art...
i've heard it said, that to meet victoria beckham, is to fall in love with her charm and self-deprecating nature. and whether or not her pr team has worked wonders or if that's truly who she is - you've got to give her some credit, as she's doing a pretty bang up job creating a niche for herself in the fashion world.
she seems to have a knack at designing dresses that are classic and pretty. and realizing that perhaps the corseted and totally body-con can't be worn by everyone, she's even added looser shaped frocks that perhaps someone with even a smidge of hip could wear.
i really do adore the fetching charm of karen walker. clothes that are as sweet and modern as they are abundantly wearable. i am wanting these pieces, big time!
it wouldn't normally make sense, to combine influences of the asian, then add a pinch of the greco-roman - and expect it to end up looking quite as good as the 2010 s/s diane von furstenberg collection actually does. it does whisper a bit of the bohemian, but not in that over-done 2006 sort of way, and there are loads of wearable pieces here that i think a whole slew of ladies would love to have in their wardrobe.
i know that i'll probably be standing on my own when i happen to mention that alexander wang, the wunderkind of new york, the 2008 cfda/vogue fashion fund winner - does nothing for me. and i don't mind being on my own having that opinion.
but, i really must ask... who is going to wear this football-inspired collection? even dissecting it piece by piece, it just doesn't seem to scan for me. and again, i know i'm on a very lonely island having this particular opinion, so if you'd like to enlighten me...
never really one to be a front-runner with the oohs and ahhs, cynthia rowley tends to hang back in my mind during nyfw. although completely accessible and lovely, i suppose her clothes just don't wow me as much as other designer's work does.
however, this ss2010 collection was utterly divine. quirky, artsy and if you looked closely enough - a little rough around the edges. this collection was a win in my book:
something was a bit off with yigal azrouël's ss2010 presentation.
he's continued on with his vision of the modern woman with a certain edge about her, but this season's collection strikes me as a bit alexander wang-ish in outcome... and that's a shame, because i think there's more than enough alexander wang 'out there' and not nearly enough of yigal's usual modern elegance.

twinkle by wenlan's ss2010 collection is definitely where my head-space has been as of late in terms of easy dressing that doesn't fit neatly into what the latest trends are. i like the modernity and the ease of it, without it being too faddish...

deciding that i was going to start things off a bit slowly and ease myself into NYFW worked out pretty well, as the first round of presentations decided to do the same. thus far, there's been nothing that blew me away, and nothing that has elicited a negative response - things just started off a bit quieter than usual...
i'm interested to see how the rest of the week shapes up. but for now, a quick gander of just a handful of the first ones out of the gate.
prabal gurung ss10 - proving that the girl can get all dressed up, but she doesn't have to succumb to pinks and bows:
ports 1961 ss10 - which was all light and airy, with pinks to boot - but didn't come off as being twee:
and then a bit of vena cava ss10 - doing what they do best with the chic girl about town - but this time, with a tribal bent:
